Market Discos!

Disco Soup

A peel good solution to food waste.

From Uganda to Japan, Brazil to the Netherlands, the global Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) joins forces for World Disco Soup Day. On this day, all over the world, we throw parties where organizers and visitors turn food waste into a Disco Soup! An event to cook, eat and dance together. Showing the fun way to save food, while thinking seriously about the amount that goes to waste.

Two years ago, SFYN organized the first ever World Disco Soup Day. Together with tens of thousands of people we danced all day long and saved serious amounts of food. We turned more than 5000 kilograms of food into 25,000 meals. Over a hundred Disco Soups were organized, in 40 countries, across 5 continents.

Disco Pickle

Kind of a Big Dill

Inspired by Disco Soup, we collaborated with Portland Farmers Market and Cook First PDX to host three Disco Pickle events. Disco Pickle is a free community event hosted at different farmers markets across Portland to teach and share knowledge about quick-pickling, build community in the market spaces, and bring support to local farmers. Market goers bring any produce items they want to pickle from the market to our disco booth, where they can get a free jar, spices, and hot brine to make their own pickles to take home.
